Treatment of Arthritis Using Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Pulsed Magnetic Therapy
Treatment of arthritis using anti-inflammatory effects of pulsed magnetic therapy with a frequency of 5 Hz and intensity 4 μT was tested by a scientific team of R. Selvam (2007) and the results were published in the scientific journal Life Sciences.
Before commencing the treatment, the team noticed, in the chronic phase of arthritis, increased levels of peroxide lipids and reduced immunity due to used up antioxidant enzymes. Elevated levels of peroxide lipids indicate that free radicals damage cells possibly causing mutagenicity and carcinogenicity.
Closer examination revealed that pumping calcium ions across the plasma membrane was suppressed, while the level of intracellular calcium ions was increased. Calcium ions were thus not being transported into cells.
After application of low-frequency pulsed magnetic field, plasma membranes of cells were stabilized.
Thanks to anti-inflammatory effects of pulsed magnetic field therapy, pumping calcium ions into cells across plasma membranes was restored and the level of intracellular calcium ions was reduced as well.
Pulsed magnetic therapy therefore fixes the processes in the body which are negatively affected by arthritis as described with its anti-inflammatory effect, and is thus suitable for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
