Reliability of Pulsed Magnetic Therapy in Treatment of Back Pain
Reliability of pulsed magnetic therapy in treatment of back pain was tested by a team of R. N. Harden (2007) on 40 patients in a randomized, placebo-controlled study.
During treatment in the first two weeks, there was no difference between the results of the placebo group and those of the group that was undergoing low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy. After that, however, a significant change was recorded by the team. Patients affected by the pulsed magnetic field achieved much greater improvement after two weeks. Their pain decreased by more than 20% in comparison to the placebo group.
The results of this study therefore confirm the analgesic effects of pulsed magnetic field with 2 Hz frequency and 15 mT intensity.
At the same time the results show that for the analgesic effects more than two weeks of pulsed magnetic therapy might be required. This, however, according to the authors does not affect its usefulness and it should therefore become a part of holistic care.
