Comparison of Various Procedures in the Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A comparison of various procedures in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome was carried out in 2016 on 40 Egyptian women by a team of D. M. Kamel. The effects of a pulsed magnetic field with 50 Hz frequency and 8 mT intensity were also one of the tested treatment options.

All 40 women with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome were divided into two groups in this randomized, double-blind study. The first group underwent pulsed magnetic therapy accompanied by exercise of the nerves and tendons of the affected wrist three times a week for four weeks. The other group was treated with therapeutic pulse ultrasound and the same wrist exercise.

Pain levels, hand function and strength, sensory and distal motor latency and median nerve conduction velocity were evaluated before and after treatments. Significant decrease in pain and sensory and distal motor latency were observed in both groups as well as a large increase in median nerve conduction velocity and improvement of hand grip. Overall, however, the group treated with pulsed magnetic therapy achieved better results.

The study, therefore, suggests that by positive effects on the median nerve significant pain relief and better wrist and hand function can be achieved in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome both with pulsed magnetic therapy and pulse ultrasound. However, greater efficiency can be expected from the effects of pulsed magnetic fields.
